Based on your analysis of local on-site and mobile car wash or auto detailing businesses, you can start to carve out which services you would like to offer to differentiate your business from your competitors. Keep in mind that you can offer a menu of services with add-ons like we do at Washos. Doing so allows you to attract people who have different price points and you boost your appeal to a wider audience.
Your pricing should ideally reflect the demographics of the area you are targeting and the prices of your competitors. Obviously, higher priced services require more professionalism and higher quality. If you’re going to price yourself above the market, then carefully consider why someone would want to pay $x more for your service than your competitor. What do you offer that is unique? Research about all the city and state licenses and permits required to run a mobile car business (or mobile auto detailing). Also remember to check the laws of the city you are going to operate in to make sure you’re in compliance. For example the California Department of Industrial Relations has a page dedicated state requirements to run a car wash business. Some states may also regulate where you wash cars, where you can discharge water and what kinds of chemicals you aren’t allowed to use.
Some cities have additional requirements for environmental compliance, so to avoid any fines be mindful and follow the laws.

Mobile Car Wash Insurance
Don’t forget to get liability insurance and/or business insurance. Having good coverage is a sign of trust so mention it on your website and business card.
The most common insurance for a mobile car wash business is Garage Keeper’s Liability. This will cover you while you are working on a vehicle and while it is in your possession.
Mobile Car Wash Equipment
Start making a list of equipment you will require and what you have available. Keep in mind that your equipment needs will be based on services you decide to offer. While we don’t recommend buying very expensive car wash equipment, you shouldn’t pick the cheapest either. High quality products deliver better results.
Next up, you will need a vehicle large enough to store all your equipment. The size of your vehicle will depend on the services you offer. In most cases a large sedan or SUV is enough. You can alternatively buy a used van for $3,000 to $5,000.
In most states you can’t dump water so you will need a water reclamation system. And if you are offering water car washes then you will need to carry water with you. You should have between 80 to 100 gallon water capacity and enough power to operate a professional buffer and vacuum.

I started it with a toyota yaris, I cancelled the back seat and customized a water tank. I had my pressure washer in my trunk that was petrol operated which you can creat your self if you dont want to buy it. Just do it. Within the first month you would now how to operate. Dont think of things. The only reason im here today os to find ideas nothing else.

Keep in mind both options get the job done so it really comes down to the detailers preference. The gas powered pressure washers tend to cost more. Hope that helps!

I’m interested in running the same business as yours over across in my country, would be happy to let you know how that goes. I will be focusing on 3 key services – external, internal and deluxe (includes wax and both internal/external) as my starting points, since I am new to business I’d like to keep it quite lean as my initial MVP. Yes I understand i lose out on upselling opportunities, but would like to focus on building my foundations first.
A friend of mine operating successfully with an almost identical structure to yours but in a different industry uses contractors as his on-field cleaners, meaning they use their own equipment and so on. Would you agree that this would not work for this sort of business since you mentioned above that using ‘cheap products’ is not exactly ideal? So to ensure only quality products are used, we should provide them with the on-going materials?
Another question I have is, I see that you are an advocate of green, waterless cleaning…Have you had any instances where waterless sprays and etc have not been effective? I am seriously considering a complete waterless service as it grants a higher degree of convenience and flexibility, but would not want to do so at the cost of quality.
